Friday Five: Gorgeous Hikes in Southern Indiana

We were lucky enough to get two full days of hiking in this week, plus a bonus afternoon for some watery fun with the kids. We discovered several new hiking spots around southern Indiana and revisited the delights of an old favorite. Here’s where we hit the trails this week.

Leonard Springs Nature Park

4685 S Leonard Springs Rd, Bloomington, IN 47403

Leonard Springs Nature Park

Tucked away on the back roads of Bloomington, Leonard Springs Nature Park is easy to miss. Keep a careful eye out for the sign tucked back in the trees. The gravel parking lot is small, but traffic isn’t too heavy around this hidden gem. Visit the day after a heavy rain for the best sights of this park’s stunning waterfalls.

Green’s Bluff

County Rd 75 E, Spencer, IN 47460

Green's Bluff

You’ll travel quite a few back roads to get to this trail head, but this is another well-hidden trail that’s worth the visit. Check out the graveyard beside the trailhead before you head out to find several graves from the mid-1800s. Out on the trail you’ll find beautiful bluffs and picturesque paths along Raccoon Creek.

Rose Island

12500 Indiana 62, Charlestown, IN 47111

Charlestown State Park

Tucked away in Charlestown State Park, Rose Island offers a stroll back in time, exploring the remains of a 1920’s theme park. There’s little left of the original park, but informational signs and hand-crank voice boxes tell the tale of a bustling waterfront attraction, complete with a pool, zoo, dance hall, and resort. Head out for a hike to explore the remains of this once-popular summer destination.

Grouse Ridge

S 700 W, Columbus, IN 47201

Grouse Ridge The Grouse Ridge Public Fishing Area is set on a gorgeous lake. There’s a boat ramp if you want to head out on the water and plenty of convenient spots for fishing from the shore. If you’re looking for a new spot to cast your pole in Southern Indiana, don’t miss this find.

McCormick’s Creek State Park

250 McCormick Creek Park Rd, Spencer, IN 47460 McCormicks Creek waterfall

McCormick’s Creek is a favorite we visited twice this week. Once on an adults-only excursion for several miles of hiking, and again with the boys for an adventure playing in the waterfall. It’s easy to see why we love this park.
